La sostenibilidad aparecía ligada a la competitividad en la Estrategia de Investigación Europea 2020, expresándose el apoyo a una gestión sostenible, pero manteniendo la necesaria competitividad. Este binomio vuelve a estar presente en el Horizonte Europa 2021-2027.

Cuando en las sociedades desarrolladas se alcanzan determinados niveles de bienestar aflora la necesidad de encontrar un equilibrio entre la riqueza material y la riqueza emocional. En este contexto, la creación de valor económico, tecnológico y social requiere un desarrollo responsable, con participación de todos los implicados, que resulte compatible con la sostenibilidad medioambiental, con los valores éticos de las personas y con los derechos individuales de opinión, participación, conocimiento, trasparencia y privacidad. Desde este marco conceptual, el Instituto presta atención a algunos de los más relevantes desafíos para las sociedades desarrolladas:

Responsabilidad social corporativa (RSC)
Formas alternativas de participación política y gestión económica
